Internal Parasites in Goats: Signs, Treatment, and How to Stay Ahead of Them
Ask any experienced goat farmer in Nigeria what kills more goats than any disease, any predator, or any management mistake and the answer you will hear most consistently is worms.
Not dramatic sudden death. Not a visible outbreak that sends you running to the vet. Just a slow, quiet decline. A goat that was fine three weeks ago is now thin. Its coat has lost its shine. It is falling behind the rest of the herd at feeding time. The younger ones are not growing the way they should. You treat for one thing, it does not improve. You try something else. Still nothing changes.
What is happening inside that goat is a war it is losing. A war being fought in its digestive system by parasitic worms that are consuming its nutrition, damaging its gut lining, causing chronic blood loss, and suppressing its immune system all at the same time.
Internal parasites, specifically gastrointestinal roundworms, are the single biggest health and productivity challenge facing goat farmers across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. Understanding them is not optional for any farmer who is serious about making goat farming profitable.
The Worm That Matters Most
There are several species of internal parasites that affect goats in Africa but one species causes the majority of serious illness and death and deserves to be understood specifically.
Haemonchus contortus, commonly called the barber pole worm, is a blood-feeding roundworm that lives in the abomasum, the fourth stomach compartment of goats. It attaches to the stomach lining and feeds on blood continuously. A single adult female Haemonchus worm consumes approximately 0.05ml of blood per day and lays between 5,000 and 10,000 eggs per day that pass out in the goat’s faeces onto the pasture where they develop into infective larvae.
The mathematics of a Haemonchus infestation are brutal. A goat carrying 2,000 adult worms, which is not an unusually high burden in unmanaged conditions across Nigerian and Ghanaian pastures, is losing 100ml of blood per day to those worms alone. That is ongoing haemorrhage happening inside an animal that looks, from the outside, like it simply is not thriving.
Other significant internal parasites include Trichostrongylus species which damage the small intestine lining and cause chronic diarrhoea and weight loss, Oesophagostomum species which cause nodular worm disease in the large intestine, and Fasciola hepatica, the liver fluke, which causes serious liver damage in goats grazing wet or waterlogged pastures in the humid zones of Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.
Reading the Signs Before You Lose the Animal
The clinical signs of internal parasite infestation in goats progress through recognisable stages. Catching them at the early stage rather than the late stage is the difference between a goat that recovers fully and one that dies despite treatment.
The FAMACHA System: Your Most Practical Diagnostic Tool
The FAMACHA system was developed specifically for Haemonchus diagnosis in small ruminants and is one of the most useful practical tools available to African goat farmers. It requires no laboratory equipment, no veterinary training, and costs nothing to use once you have learned it.
Pull down the lower eyelid of the goat and observe the colour of the conjunctival membrane, the pink tissue lining the inside of the lower eyelid. Compare what you see to the FAMACHA colour chart which runs from deep red through pink to white.
Deep red to red pink indicates a healthy animal with adequate red blood cell levels. No treatment needed.
Pink indicates mild anaemia. Monitor closely and recheck in two weeks.
Pale pink indicates moderate anaemia. Treatment with anthelmintic is recommended.
Very pale pink to white indicates severe anaemia from heavy blood-feeding worm burden. Immediate treatment is required. An animal at this stage may need supportive treatment including iron supplementation in addition to anthelmintic.
Check every goat in your herd using FAMACHA every two to three weeks during the rainy season when larval contamination of pasture is highest and worm burdens build fastest. Record your findings for each animal. Goats that consistently score in the treatment range despite regular anthelmintic treatment are either reinfecting themselves rapidly from heavily contaminated pasture or carrying worms that have developed resistance to your current anthelmintic product.
Other Signs to Watch For
Bottle jaw is a characteristic swelling under the lower jaw caused by fluid accumulation from severe protein loss due to Haemonchus infestation. It appears as a soft painless swelling that pits when pressed with a finger. Bottle jaw indicates a severe infestation that has been ongoing for some time. Animals showing bottle jaw require immediate aggressive treatment and supportive care.
Diarrhoea that persists despite dietary management suggests Trichostrongylus or Oesophagostomum infestation rather than Haemonchus, which causes anaemia without necessarily causing diarrhoea. Identifying the predominant symptom helps guide your choice of anthelmintic product.
Poor growth in kids that are receiving adequate nutrition, rough staring coat in adults, and chronic weight loss despite good feed access are all indicators of subclinical worm burden that is reducing productivity without yet causing obvious clinical signs.
Treatment: Choosing the Right Anthelmintic and Using It Correctly
The anthelmintic drug class you choose and how you administer it determines whether your treatment works or contributes to the growing problem of anthelmintic resistance that is making worm control increasingly difficult on African goat farms.
The Three Main Drug Classes
Benzimidazoles including albendazole and fenbendazole work by disrupting the worm’s energy metabolism. Albendazole is the most widely available in Nigeria and Ghana, sold under brand names including Albezole and Wormex. Dose goats at 7.5mg per kilogram of body weight given orally. Weigh animals before dosing or use a weight tape to estimate body weight accurately. Underdosing is the primary driver of benzimidazole resistance in goat worm populations. Do not guess the weight and then round down.
Levamisole works through a different mechanism, causing spastic paralysis of the worm. It is available as an injectable solution and as an oral drench in Nigeria and Kenya. Dose at 7.5mg per kilogram of body weight. Levamisole has a narrow safety margin meaning the difference between an effective dose and a toxic dose is smaller than with other drug classes. Accurate weight-based dosing is critical.
Macrocyclic lactones including ivermectin and doramectin are the broadest spectrum option, effective against roundworms, lungworms, and external parasites simultaneously. Ivermectin injectable is widely available through veterinary suppliers across Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. Dose subcutaneously at 0.2mg per kilogram of body weight. Ivermectin is not effective against liver fluke and should be combined with a flukicide in areas where Fasciola hepatica is prevalent.
The Targeted Selective Treatment Approach
Treating every goat in your herd with anthelmintic on a fixed calendar schedule regardless of their individual worm burden is the practice that has driven anthelmintic resistance to crisis levels on goat farms across Africa and globally.
The targeted selective treatment approach, which uses FAMACHA scoring and body condition assessment to identify and treat only the animals that actually need treatment at each assessment point, dramatically reduces the total anthelmintic use on the farm. This preserves a population of worms that have never been exposed to the drug, called the refugia population, which dilutes any resistant worms that survive treatment and slows the development of resistance across the whole worm population.
In practical terms this means checking every goat with FAMACHA every two to three weeks and treating only those scoring pale pink or white. Animals scoring pink or better receive no treatment at that assessment point regardless of when they were last treated. This approach requires more time investment than blanket treatment but produces better long-term worm control outcomes and significantly extends the useful life of your anthelmintic products.
Combination Treatment for Resistant Worm Populations
On farms where anthelmintic resistance is already established, treating with a single drug class produces incomplete kill of the worm population because the resistant worms survive and continue breeding. Combining two drug classes from different groups at a single treatment event kills a higher proportion of the worm population because worms resistant to one class are unlikely to also be resistant to a different class simultaneously.
Combine albendazole oral drench with ivermectin injectable given on the same day for the most effective combination treatment currently available to Nigerian and Kenyan goat farmers. This combination covers benzimidazole-susceptible worms with albendazole and ivermectin-susceptible worms with ivermectin, producing a kill rate significantly higher than either drug alone on a farm with mixed resistance.
Pasture Management: The Part Most Farmers Skip
Treating goats without managing the pasture they graze is a losing battle. Every treated goat returns to the same pasture carrying the same infective larvae that caused the infestation in the first place. Within two to three weeks of treatment on heavily contaminated pasture, worm burdens rebuild to pre-treatment levels.
Rotational grazing is the most powerful pasture management tool for worm control. Move goats to a fresh pasture every three to four weeks and rest the vacated pasture for at least eight weeks. Haemonchus infective larvae survive on pasture for approximately six to eight weeks under Nigerian and Kenyan conditions before dying without finding a host. Resting pasture for eight weeks before returning goats allows the larval population to die down significantly before regrazing.
Avoid grazing goats on wet or waterlogged pasture in the humid zones of southern Nigeria, Ghana, and western Kenya where liver fluke is prevalent. Fasciola hepatica requires a specific freshwater snail as an intermediate host and that snail lives in wet soil and shallow standing water. Keeping goats off wet pasture breaks the liver fluke transmission cycle more effectively than any treatment approach.
Browse-based feeding where goats graze shrubs and trees rather than ground-level grass significantly reduces worm intake because infective larvae concentrate in the lowest 5 centimetres of vegetation above the soil surface. Goats that browse rather than graze low grass consistently carry lower worm burdens than goats grazing the same area at ground level.
Kids Are Not Small Adults: Special Considerations for Young Goats
Kids under three months of age are significantly more susceptible to fatal worm infestation than adult goats because their immune systems have not yet developed the partial resistance that adult goats acquire through repeated exposure. A worm burden that causes mild anaemia in an adult can kill a kid within days.
Check kids using FAMACHA from four weeks of age onward and treat at the first sign of pale conjunctival membranes. Do not wait for bottle jaw or visible weakness in kids. By the time those signs appear in a young animal the infestation is already at a critical level.
Dose kids based on accurate body weight. The temptation to estimate a small animal’s weight casually and round up is understandable but dangerous with levamisole which has a narrow safety margin. Use a kitchen scale or small animal weight tape for kids under ten kilograms.
House kids separately from adult goats on clean pasture or dry lot for the first three months of life where possible. Adult goats are the primary source of pasture contamination on the farm and separating kids from adult grazing areas during their most vulnerable period dramatically reduces early larval challenge.
