You worked the whole season for that maize. You planted on time, managed the pests in the field, harvested at the right moisture, and stacked the bags in your store with a sense of satisfaction that only a farmer who has been through the full cycle understands.
Three months later you open the store and the smell hits you before you even see the damage. A musty, sour smell that experienced farmers recognise immediately. You cut open a bag and find grain that is hollowed out, turned to dust in places, with small brown beetles moving slowly through what is left.
Maize weevils. And by the time you can smell them the damage is already deep.
This is not bad luck. It is a storage problem with a known cause, a known prevention, and a solution that costs less than the losses it prevents. This article walks you through every step of protecting your stored maize from weevil damage before it happens.
The Insect Behind the Damage
Sitophilus zeamais, the maize weevil, is the most destructive stored grain pest across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. It is a small reddish brown beetle approximately three to four millimetres long with a distinctive long snout that it uses to bore into individual maize kernels.
What makes the maize weevil particularly difficult to control is its life cycle. The adult female bores a small hole into a maize kernel, lays a single egg inside, and seals the hole with a secretion that makes it almost invisible to the naked eye. The egg hatches inside the kernel and the larva feeds on the endosperm, the starchy interior of the grain, through its entire development. Pupation also occurs inside the kernel. The adult beetle emerges by chewing through the kernel wall, leaving a characteristic round exit hole in the empty shell.
The entire cycle from egg to adult takes between four and six weeks at Nigerian storage temperatures. A single pair of weevils entering your store at harvest can produce a population of thousands within three months. The grain losses they cause come not just from direct feeding but from the heat and moisture generated by a large weevil population metabolising inside a sealed grain store, which accelerates mould development and makes the grain unfit for consumption even where weevil feeding damage is not total.
The most important fact about maize weevil management is this. By the time adult weevils are visible moving on the surface of stored grain, the infestation has already been established inside the grain for weeks or months. Visible adults are not the beginning of the problem. They are evidence that the problem is already advanced.
Why Your Maize Gets Weevils Even When You Think You Are Being Careful
Understanding the specific entry points for weevil infestation closes the gaps that allow it to happen season after season despite a farmer’s best efforts.
Field Infestation Before Harvest
Maize weevil infestation does not always begin in the store. Adult weevils fly actively and infest standing maize in the field during the late grain-filling and maturation stages, particularly when harvesting is delayed beyond physiological maturity. Maize left standing in the field after the husk has dried and split open is directly exposed to weevil egg-laying on the exposed grain surface before it ever reaches the store.
Harvest promptly when maize reaches physiological maturity. In most Nigerian and Ghanaian growing conditions this is indicated by the appearance of the black layer at the base of the kernel, visible when you remove a kernel and look at the tip that was attached to the cob. Delaying harvest beyond this point increases both field weevil infestation and aflatoxin risk from mould.
Moisture Content at Storage
Maize stored above 13 percent moisture content creates the warm humid microenvironment inside the grain mass that both supports rapid weevil reproduction and accelerates mould development. Weevil populations develop faster, live longer, and cause more damage in grain stored at high moisture than in properly dried grain.
Dry your maize to below 13 percent moisture content before storing. In practical terms this means sun-drying shelled grain spread on a clean dry surface for three to five days of good sunshine, turning regularly to ensure even drying, until a handful of grain feels hard, cool, and produces a sharp clicking sound when dropped onto a hard surface rather than a dull thud. A simple moisture meter available at agricultural equipment suppliers in Lagos, Abuja, and Nairobi gives you a precise reading before storage.
Contaminated Storage Structures
Weevils from previous seasons survive in cracks, crevices, and organic debris inside storage structures between grain lots. When fresh grain is loaded into an uncleaned store the resident weevil population immediately infests the new grain.
Clean storage structures thoroughly before loading new grain. Remove all old grain, dust, and debris from floors, walls, and ceiling areas. Apply cypermethrin 10 EC at 10ml per litre of water as a residual spray to all interior surfaces including the floor, walls, roof, and any wooden structural elements. Allow to dry completely for at least 48 hours before loading grain.
Protection Methods That Work
Hermetic Storage
Hermetic storage is the most effective and chemical-free method of protecting stored maize available to African smallholder farmers. It works by creating a completely airtight seal around the grain that traps the oxygen inside the storage container. As the grain and any insects present respire, oxygen levels inside the sealed container drop and carbon dioxide levels rise. Within two to three weeks oxygen levels fall below the level that can sustain insect life and all weevils, larvae, eggs, and pupae present in the grain die from suffocation.
Hermetic bags including the PICS bag, which stands for Purdue Improved Crop Storage, are triple-layered woven polypropylene bags with two inner polyethylene liners that create the airtight seal. They are available through agricultural input suppliers and extension services across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa at prices ranging from 500 to 1500 naira per bag depending on size and location.
To use PICS bags correctly, fill them with grain that has been dried to below 13 percent moisture content. Tie the inner bags tightly one at a time before closing the outer bag. Do not open the bags once sealed until you are ready to use or sell the grain. A bag opened and resealed loses its hermetic protection and the weevil population will rebuild if any insects survived or entered during the opening.
Metal silos with sealed lids work on the same hermetic principle for larger storage volumes. Locally fabricated metal silos are produced by artisan metal workers in several Nigerian states and in Kenya and provide durable multi-season hermetic storage at a reasonable one-time cost.

Chemical Grain Protectants
For farmers storing grain in conventional bags or open cribs where hermetic storage is not practical, registered grain protectant chemicals applied to the grain before storage provide residual protection against weevil infestation.
Pirimiphos-methyl dust is the most widely available and effective registered grain protectant for maize storage in Nigeria and Ghana. It is sold under the brand name Actellic 50 EC as a liquid formulation for dilution or as Actellic Dust as a ready-to-use powder. Apply Actellic Dust at 1 gram per kilogram of grain by mixing the dust thoroughly through the grain as it is loaded into storage bags or bins. For liquid Actellic 50 EC, dilute 10ml in enough water to treat 100 kilograms of grain and mix thoroughly through the grain before bagging.
Pirimiphos-methyl provides residual protection against weevil infestation for up to six months in sealed bags stored in a cool dry environment. It is registered for use on maize intended for human consumption in Nigeria when used at the correct rate and with the required pre-consumption interval observed.
Deltamethrin grain protectant powder is an alternative registered option available in Kenya and South Africa. Apply at 1 gram per kilogram of grain using the same mixing method as pirimiphos-methyl dust.
Wear a nose mask and gloves when handling grain protectant chemicals during application. Wash hands thoroughly after treatment. Store treated grain away from living areas and food preparation spaces.
Traditional and Organic Protection Methods
Dried neem leaves mixed through stored maize at a ratio of one part neem leaves to ten parts grain by volume provides a chemical-free protection option that is accessible to farmers in any location where neem trees grow. The azadirachtin and other compounds in dried neem leaves repel adult weevils and disrupt larval development in infested grain. Replace neem leaves every two months as they dry out and lose potency.
Dried chilli pepper mixed through stored grain at 500 grams of dried ground chilli per 100 kilograms of grain repels adult weevils through the capsaicin compounds in the pepper. This method is used by farmers in parts of Benue and Nasarawa states in Nigeria with reported effectiveness for short-term storage of up to three months.
Wood ash mixed through grain at 500 grams per 50 kilograms of grain creates an abrasive alkaline environment that damages the body surface of weevils and reduces their ability to survive and reproduce in treated grain. It is the lowest-cost organic option available to Nigerian and Ghanaian farmers and works best as a supplement to other methods rather than as standalone protection for long-term storage beyond three months.

Monitoring Stored Grain Through the Season
Storing maize and walking away until you need it is one of the most expensive mistakes an African farmer can make. Regular monitoring catches infestation early when intervention is still affordable.
Check stored grain every two weeks during the first two months after storage when any infestation present at loading is building toward detectable levels. Open one bag from different parts of the store, scoop out a one-kilogram sample from different depths in the bag, and spread it on a clean white surface. Look for adult weevils, the characteristic round exit holes in individual kernels, and fine powdery flour-like material called frass that weevils produce as they feed through grain. Count the number of damaged kernels in your sample. More than five damaged kernels per hundred indicates an established infestation requiring immediate action.
Check the temperature of stored grain by inserting your hand or a thermometer probe into the centre of the grain mass through the bag. Grain temperature significantly above ambient air temperature indicates active insect respiration inside the storage, a sign of active infestation even before visible damage is apparent.
When Weevils Are Already in Your Store
If you discover an active weevil infestation in stored maize the response depends on how advanced the damage is and what the grain is intended for.
For grain showing early infestation with limited kernel damage, sun-drying the entire lot spread thinly on a clean surface for two to three days exposes the grain to heat and UV light that kills adult weevils and disrupts larval development. After sun-drying treat with pirimiphos-methyl dust before rebagging in clean bags.
For grain with moderate infestation, fumigation with aluminium phosphide tablets is the most effective intervention. Place grain in a sealed enclosure or cover with a gastight tarpaulin. Insert aluminium phosphide tablets at two tablets per tonne of grain, place them on top of the grain pile before sealing, and maintain the seal for five days. Aluminium phosphide releases phosphine gas inside the sealed space that kills all life stages of weevils including eggs and pupae. This treatment requires strict safety precautions. Phosphine gas is highly toxic to humans. Apply only in well-ventilated outdoor conditions, wear a proper respirator mask rated for phosphine gas, and never enter the fumigated space until it has been thoroughly ventilated for at least 24 hours after seal removal.
For grain with severe infestation where more than 30 percent of kernels are damaged, the remaining grain may still have value as animal feed even where it is no longer suitable for human consumption. Do not discard heavily damaged grain without first assessing its feed value for poultry or pig supplementation.
