Fumigation is the most misunderstood grain protection practice in African farming.

Some farmers avoid it entirely because they have heard it is dangerous and do not know enough about it to feel confident using it safely. Others use it carelessly, without protective equipment, without proper sealing, without understanding what the gas they are releasing actually does to anything that breathes it. Both groups are making serious mistakes, just in opposite directions.

The truth about fumigation sits between those two extremes. Done correctly it is one of the most effective tools available for eliminating an established grain infestation completely, including eggs and pupae that chemical dust treatments cannot reach. Done incorrectly it can kill the farmer applying it.

Understanding What Fumigation Actually Does

Fumigation works differently from contact insecticides like pirimiphos-methyl dust or cypermethrin spray. Contact insecticides kill insects that come into physical contact with the chemical. They do not penetrate inside grain kernels where weevil eggs, larvae, and pupae are developing. This is why grain treated with contact insecticide can still have emerging adult weevils weeks after treatment. The adults that were inside the kernels during treatment were never reached by the chemical.

Fumigants work by releasing a toxic gas that penetrates into every space in the grain mass including inside individual kernels. The gas reaches every life stage of every insect present in the grain including eggs and pupae that contact insecticides miss entirely. When fumigation is done correctly in a properly sealed space it achieves complete elimination of the entire insect population present at the time of treatment.

The fumigant used for grain storage across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa is aluminium phosphide, which releases phosphine gas when it comes into contact with moisture in the air. Phosphine is colourless, has a faint garlic-like odour at high concentrations, and is lethal to all aerobically respiring organisms including humans at concentrations that develop rapidly inside a sealed storage space during fumigation.

That toxicity is what makes aluminium phosphide effective as a fumigant and what makes its misuse so dangerous.

When Fumigation Is the Right Tool

Fumigation is not a routine grain protection measure that every farmer should use at every storage season. It is a targeted intervention for specific situations where other methods are insufficient.

Use fumigation when you discover an active weevil or grain moth infestation in stored grain that has already built to significant levels and needs to be eliminated completely before further damage occurs. Fumigation at this point eliminates the entire population including the immature stages inside kernels that contact treatments miss.

Use fumigation when you are purchasing grain from an external source and want to eliminate any infestation present before combining it with your own clean grain in storage.

Use fumigation when you are storing large volumes of grain for more than six months and want to ensure complete pest elimination at the beginning of the storage period before applying contact protectant dust for ongoing residual protection.

Do not use fumigation as a substitute for proper grain drying and cleaning before storage. Fumigation kills insects but does not dry grain, remove dust and debris, or prevent mould development in grain that was stored at high moisture content.

What You Need Before You Start

Preparation is where fumigation safety begins. Do not start this process without every item on this list confirmed and ready.

Aluminium phosphide tablets or pellets registered for grain fumigation in your country. In Nigeria the registered product is Phostoxin or Celphos. In Kenya it is available as Phostoxin through registered pest control suppliers. Purchase only from a registered agro-chemical dealer and ensure the product has a valid NAFDAC registration number in Nigeria or a PCPB registration number in Kenya. Do not purchase aluminium phosphide from informal markets or unlabelled sources.

A gastight tarpaulin large enough to cover your entire grain stack with at least one metre of overlap on all sides. Standard woven polypropylene tarpaulins are not gastight. You need a rubberised or polyethylene sheet that does not allow gas passage. Check the tarpaulin for holes or tears before use. A single hole in the cover defeats the entire fumigation.

Sandbags or soil bags sufficient to seal the perimeter of the tarpaulin against the floor completely.

Proper respiratory protection. A standard dust mask or surgical mask provides zero protection against phosphine gas. You need a full-face respirator with a phosphine-rated gas cartridge or a self-contained breathing apparatus for any task that requires entering the fumigation space. For the application process where you are inserting tablets under the tarpaulin and immediately sealing it, a phosphine-rated half-face respirator with the correct cartridge is the minimum acceptable protection.

Step-by-Step Fumigation Process

Step One: Prepare the Grain and the Space

Remove all people, animals, and birds from the storage building and the immediate surrounding area before beginning. Post warning signs at every entry point to the building and at the perimeter of the surrounding area.

Stack grain bags in a single block configuration with no gaps between bags. Gaps inside the stack allow gas to escape the grain mass rather than penetrating through it. A tight continuous stack maximises gas contact with all grain.

Step Two: Calculate Your Aluminium Phosphide Dose

The standard dose for aluminium phosphide fumigation of bagged grain is three tablets per tonne of grain for a five-day exposure period. This rate is sufficient to achieve lethal phosphine concentrations throughout the grain mass when the space is properly sealed.

Calculate the total weight of grain you are fumigating and multiply by three to get the total number of tablets required. Do not exceed this rate. Higher doses do not improve efficacy but increase the risk of toxic gas accumulation during application and ventilation.

Step Three: Insert the Tablets

Put on your respirator, gloves, and protective clothing before opening the aluminium phosphide container.

Using a wooden or plastic probe or long-handled spoon, insert tablets into the grain mass by pushing them between bags at regular intervals across the stack. Place tablets at multiple depths, near the top, middle, and bottom of the stack, to ensure gas distribution throughout the full grain mass. Do not place all tablets on top of the grain surface. Gas generated on the surface disperses upward and does not penetrate deeply into the grain mass effectively.

Work quickly. Aluminium phosphide begins releasing phosphine gas immediately on contact with air moisture. Do not stop to rest or adjust your equipment once you have opened the container.

Step Four: Seal the Space

If fumigating in a building, close and seal all doors, windows, and ventilation openings immediately after inserting tablets. Use wet newspaper, foam strips, or tape to seal any gaps around doors and windows.

If fumigating under a tarpaulin, pull the tarpaulin over the entire grain stack immediately after inserting tablets. Bury the tarpaulin edges under sandbags or soil bags all the way around the perimeter to create a complete gas seal. Check every section of the perimeter seal before stepping away.

Move immediately upwind of the sealed area after completing the seal. Do not remain near the sealed fumigation space.

Step Five: Maintain the Seal for Five Days

The minimum exposure period for aluminium phosphide fumigation is five days. Do not open the sealed space or disturb the tarpaulin for any reason during this period.

Place warning signs at all entry points and brief everyone on your farm including family members, farm workers, and neighbours about the fumigation in progress, its location, and the danger of approaching or entering the sealed area.

Check the perimeter seal visually from a distance of at least two metres every 24 hours during the fumigation period. If the tarpaulin has lifted or sandbag weights have shifted, re-secure from upwind while wearing your respirator. Do not approach a compromised seal from the downwind side.

Step Six: Ventilation After Fumigation

After five full days, ventilate the fumigation space before any person enters.

For building fumigation, open all doors and windows from outside while standing upwind and move away immediately. Allow the building to ventilate naturally for a minimum of 24 hours with all openings fully open before any person enters. After 24 hours ventilation, enter briefly wearing your respirator, check for any remaining aluminium phosphide tablets that did not fully react, and remove them using tongs into a container of water which neutralises any remaining unreacted material. Return for a second ventilation check after another hour before allowing unprotected persons to enter.

For tarpaulin fumigation, lift the upwind edge of the tarpaulin from a distance using a rope or long pole while standing well upwind. Do not lean over the tarpaulin to lift it. Allow gas to disperse for at least two hours before removing the tarpaulin completely. Allow a further 24 hours of open-air ventilation before workers handle the fumigated grain.

Step Seven: Dispose of Used Tablets Safely

Aluminium phosphide tablets that have fully reacted leave a grey powder residue of aluminium hydroxide which is non-toxic. Collect this residue, mix it with water to ensure any remaining unreacted material is neutralised, and dispose of it away from water sources.

Return unused tablets to the sealed original container immediately after use. Aluminium phosphide reacts with any atmospheric moisture and will continue to release phosphine gas if left exposed in air. Seal the container tightly, store in a cool dry place, and use remaining product within the same storage season.

Emergency Response if Something Goes Wrong

If anyone shows symptoms of phosphine exposure including headache, dizziness, nausea, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing during or after the fumigation process, move them immediately to fresh air away from the fumigation area. Lay them down and keep them warm. Call for emergency medical assistance immediately and tell the medical team that the exposure was to phosphine gas from aluminium phosphide. There is no specific antidote for phosphine poisoning. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic and requires medical facilities.

Do not attempt to rescue someone who has collapsed inside a sealed fumigation space without proper breathing apparatus. Two people have died attempting to rescue one in phosphine-related incidents on African farms. Call for professional emergency assistance.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

Aluminium phosphide is a restricted-use pesticide in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. In several of these countries its sale and use is legally restricted to licensed pest control operators or to farmers who have received formal training in its use.

Before purchasing or using aluminium phosphide, confirm the current regulatory requirements with your state agricultural development programme in Nigeria, the Pest Control Products Board in Kenya, or the Environmental Protection Agency in Ghana. Using restricted pesticides without the required authorisation exposes you to legal liability in addition to the safety risks.

Where regulatory requirements restrict individual farmer use of aluminium phosphide, licensed fumigation service providers operate in major grain-producing areas across all four countries and provide professional fumigation services at contracted rates that are cost-effective for larger grain volumes.

What Fumigation Cannot Do

Fumigation eliminates the insect population present in grain at the time of treatment. It provides no residual protection against reinfestation after the fumigation space is opened and the gas has dispersed.

After fumigation apply pirimiphos-methyl dust at one gram per kilogram of grain mixed thoroughly through the grain before rebagging or resealing the storage container. This contact protectant provides the residual protection that fumigation cannot, preventing reinfestation by adult weevils entering the storage space after treatment.

Fumigation does not improve grain quality. It does not reduce aflatoxin contamination, reverse moisture damage, or restore the nutritional value of grain that has been partially consumed by insects before treatment. It stops further damage from the insect population present. The damage that occurred before fumigation is permanent.
