Tomato farming in Nigeria is one of the most demanding and most rewarding decisions a smallholder can make. The crop is in demand every week of the year, prices spike predictably during the dry season when supply drops, and a well-managed stand can return more income per hectare than almost any other vegetable grown across the country.

It is also one of the most pest-pressured crops in Nigerian agriculture. From transplanting to final harvest, tomato faces attack from more insect species simultaneously than nearly any other vegetable. A farmer who enters a tomato season without a clear understanding of which chemicals address which pests, at what dose, and at what point in the season, is farming on hope rather than on knowledge.

This article is not a generic pesticide list. It is a practical guide to the specific products that work against specific tomato pests in Nigerian conditions, with the information you need to use each one correctly and safely.

Understanding the Pest Pressure on Nigerian Tomato

Before reaching for any chemical, knowing which pest you are dealing with determines whether the product you buy will have any effect at all.

Tuta absoluta, the tomato leafminer, has been present in Nigeria since around 2016 and is now the most destructive single pest of tomato across all major tomato-producing states. The moth lays eggs on leaves and stems. Larvae mine through leaf tissue and bore into fruits, creating irregular tunnels and causing catastrophic fruit damage that renders the tomato unmarketable. A field without active Tuta management can lose 80 to 100 percent of fruit quality.

Helicoverpa armigera, the tomato fruitworm, bores into fruits through the calyx end and feeds inside. Entry holes are visible on the fruit surface with frass packed into the opening. One larva damages multiple fruits before pupating.

Whiteflies, Bemisia tabaci, are present on Nigerian tomato farms throughout the year but peak during the dry season. They cause direct sap-feeding damage and are the primary vector of tomato yellow leaf curl virus, a disease with no cure once established in the field. Controlling whitefly is the only way to prevent the virus.

Aphids colonise young shoots and the undersides of leaves, causing curling, stunting, and virus transmission. They reproduce extremely quickly in warm conditions and populations can move from manageable to damaging within a week of the first sighting.

Spider mites, Tetranychus species, create a characteristic bronze stippling on leaves and fine webbing on the undersides during hot dry weather. They dehydrate the plant from the outside and populations can double in four to five days during peak dry season conditions.

The Chemical Products That Work on Nigerian Tomato

For Tuta absoluta

Coragen, whose active ingredient is chlorantraniliprole, is the most effective registered product for Tuta absoluta control currently available in Nigeria. It is a diamide insecticide that works by causing uncontrolled muscle contraction in lepidopteran larvae, making it highly specific to caterpillar pests and significantly less harmful to beneficial insects and mammals than older broad-spectrum options.

Mix at 150 millilitres per hectare, or approximately 3 millilitres per 15 litres of water for knapsack application. Apply as a thorough foliar spray covering all leaf surfaces, stems, and fruit. Apply every 10 to 14 days from two weeks after transplanting through to three weeks before final harvest. Coragen is available at registered agro-chemical dealers in Onitsha Relief market, Mile 12 Lagos, and Galadima market Abuja. Observe a 3 to 7 day pre-harvest interval as stated on the label.

Voliam Targo, which combines chlorantraniliprole with abamectin, covers both Tuta absoluta larvae and spider mites in a single application, making it particularly useful during the dry season when both pests peak simultaneously. Mix at 200 millilitres per hectare. It is more expensive than Coragen alone but the dual-action cover reduces the number of separate spray sessions needed during high-pressure periods.

Proclaim, whose active ingredient is emamectin benzoate, provides effective Tuta control at a lower cost per application than Coragen. Mix at 150 grams per hectare or 3 grams per 15 litres for knapsack application. Apply every seven days during active infestation. Proclaim has a narrower safety margin than Coragen and should be used with full PPE including gloves and a nose mask.

Rotate between Coragen, Voliam Targo, and Proclaim across the season rather than using one product repeatedly. Using the same active ingredient every application cycle across an entire season is how Tuta populations develop resistance, and resistance to diamide insecticides has already been documented in Tuta populations in some European and South American countries. Protecting the efficacy of these products in Nigeria requires disciplined rotation from the beginning of their use.

For whiteflies

Confidor, whose active ingredient is imidacloprid, applied as a soil drench at transplanting provides systemic protection through the early vegetative stage when whitefly colonisation begins. Mix 10 millilitres per 15 litres of water and pour 200 millilitres of the solution around the base of each transplanted seedling. The plant absorbs the imidacloprid through its roots and it is distributed through the sap, killing whiteflies that feed on the plant from the inside.

For foliar whitefly control later in the season, Actara, whose active ingredient is thiamethoxam, mixed at 3 grams per 15 litres and applied to leaf surfaces including undersides provides systemic and contact control. Mospilan, whose active ingredient is acetamiprid, at 5 grams per 15 litres is an alternative in the same neonicotinoid class with slightly different residual activity.

Note that neonicotinoid resistance is developing in Bemisia tabaci whitefly populations in intensively farmed areas of Nigeria. If you notice reduced whitefly knockdown from imidacloprid or thiamethoxam despite correct application, rotate to a different chemical class such as spirotetramat or pyriproxyfen for one to two spray cycles before returning to neonicotinoids.

For Helicoverpa fruitworm

Emamectin benzoate products including Proclaim and Coragen at the rates listed above cover Helicoverpa alongside Tuta in the same application, which is one of the practical advantages of choosing those products as your primary Tuta control tool. You do not need a separate product for fruitworm when diamides or emamectin benzoate are already part of your spray programme.

Where fruitworm pressure is severe and separate targeting is needed, Belt, whose active ingredient is flubendiamide, applied at 200 millilitres per hectare provides reliable lepidopteran control including Helicoverpa through the same muscle disruption mechanism as chlorantraniliprole.

For spider mites

Dynamec or Abamec, both containing abamectin as the active ingredient, are the standard mite control products used on Nigerian tomato farms. Mix at 15 millilitres per 15 litres of water. Apply directly to infested leaves including undersides where mites feed. Abamectin works by disrupting the nervous system of mites and is also active against some soil nematodes when applied as a drench, giving it secondary benefit in nematode-infested fields.

Apply at the first sign of stippling or bronzing on leaves rather than waiting for visible webbing. By the time webbing is present the mite population is already at a level that will cause significant defoliation before it is brought under control.

Sulphur-based fungicide products applied at 30 grams per 15 litres also provide useful mite suppression as a lower-cost supplement to abamectin during high-pressure dry season periods, with the added benefit of fungal disease management on the same application.

For aphids

Aphids on Nigerian tomato respond well to targeted soap spray applied directly to colonies on new shoots and leaf undersides as a first-line response during early infestation. Mix 4 tablespoons of pure liquid soap per 15 litres of water and apply directly onto the aphid colonies. This immediate mechanical response reduces the population without chemical cost or residue at the early stage when populations are still small.

For established aphid infestations that soap spray has not controlled, lambda-cyhalothrin mixed at 5 millilitres per 15 litres provides rapid contact knockdown. Apply in the early morning and avoid spraying during flowering to reduce impact on pollinators.

Building a Seasonal Spray Programme

A spray programme that rotates products across the season is more effective and less resistance-inducing than applying the same product repeatedly.

A practical seasonal programme for Nigerian tomato farmers managing Tuta, whitefly, and spider mite pressure simultaneously looks like this.

At transplanting, apply imidacloprid soil drench around each seedling base for systemic whitefly protection through the first four weeks of establishment.

From week two after transplanting, begin foliar applications of Coragen every 10 to 14 days for Tuta control. Check leaves and fruits weekly for Tuta damage and fruitworm entry holes.

At the first sign of spider mite stippling, integrate abamectin into the next spray cycle. Voliam Targo, which combines chlorantraniliprole and abamectin, provides Tuta and mite cover in one product during high-pressure periods.

At week six, rotate from Coragen to Proclaim for one to two spray cycles before returning to Coragen.

Monitor whitefly populations using yellow sticky traps hung at plant height across the field. When trap catches increase significantly, switch foliar whitefly treatment from thiamethoxam to acetamiprid for one rotation cycle.

Maintain the pre-harvest interval for every product used in your programme. Tomato buyers at major markets in Lagos, Kano, and Abuja are increasingly aware of pesticide residue issues and produce that smells of fresh pesticide application at market raises questions that cost you trust and repeat sales.

Where to Buy Genuine Products

Purchase all pesticides used in your tomato programme only from NAFDAC-registered agro-chemical dealers. The registered markets with the highest concentration of genuine products in Nigeria are Relief market in Onitsha, Anambra State, Mile 12 market in Lagos, Galadima market in Abuja, Bodija market in Ibadan, and Dawanau market in Kano.

Ask for the NAFDAC registration number on every product you buy and check that the number appears on the container label. Products without a registration number, products in packaging with blurred or misaligned printing, and products priced significantly below the known market rate for that product are warning signs of counterfeit stock that will waste your money and leave your crop unprotected.
