Amanda Balionis was astounded to discover that Ludvig Aberg’s sensational hole-in-one during the Genesis Invitational was his first in tournament play. The Swedish golfer soared to victory over in San Diego.
Clinching only his second PGA Tour win with a -12 finish at Torrey Pines, Ryder Cup star Aberg wowed spectators on Saturday by acing the 140-yard par 3 third. Despite Rory McIlroy appearing as a strong contender for the title in the third round, he ultimately fell back, ending up T17 at -3.
Aberg’s thrilling battle with American Maverick McNealy culminated in him seizing the lucrative £3.1million top prize following a phenomenal final round 66. Yet, it was his extraordinary ace that truly captivated reporter Balionis, leaving her incredulous upon learning that it was Aberg’s inaugural tournament hole-in-one.

In a conversation with Balionis for CBS, Aberg revealed: “It was actually my first hole-in-one ever in a tournament.” An astonished Balionis could not help but react with a startled: “What!”
The 25-year-old elaborated; “Yeah, so I’m more happy than anyone else. It’s nice as it was 115 meters, I think. It kind of held up a little. I tried to cut a little wedge in the wind.
“It hit it sort of right where I wanted to, which is nice when it goes in. But, anytime it goes in, and you sort of make a shot like that, it’s just a bonus, but it was really cool to see that go in.
“I mean, I whiffed my high five with Joe (Aberg’s caddie) right after, so that wasn’t very nice! That was a little embarrassing. It kind of got the adrenaline going a little bit. I ended up making a bogey on the hole after, so I guess it affected me a little. But, no, I felt like I was striking the ball pretty well.”
Despite this minor misstep, the Swede went on to clinch his second PGA title in a gripping competition that saw him surpass McNealy, as well as Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Rodgers, who both finished tied for third.
Even McIlroy, who ended up tied for seventeenth alongside six others and took home £172,000, couldn’t quite match Aberg’s performance, reports the Irish Star.
Reflecting on his triumphant moment, Aberg added: “It was awesome, it was a great fight. I felt like I was in control of the ball flight all day and really proud of the way that I finished. It was really cool.
“The [par] putt on 12 was big because I think at that point the lead was at 12 [under], and it was a putt to stay at eight. It was so much fun coming down the last few holes trying to win a tournament. It is a really special feeling.”
