Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes Lewis Hamilton has ‘lost motivation’ and won’t last long at Ferrari
Many admire the boldness of Lewis Hamilton in switching from Mercedes to Ferrari at the age of 40. However, others see it as more of a marketing and money-making move for both Ferrari and the seven-time world champion. For example, former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone predicts Lewis Hamilton won’t even make it to the end of his contract.
“He won’t last that long,” the 94-year-old said. “Piero Ferrari, who has taken him there, still thinks they’ve done the right thing. But I worry they haven’t just jumped in and end up wishing they hadn’t,” says the former F1 boss.

The first race of the 2025 F1 season is two months away. However, after his run of titles ended for Lewis Hamilton with defeat to Max Verstappen in 2021, the Briton has struggled with the current ‘ground effect’ cars. Some believe it is his advancing age that is the problem, too.
“It’s not the age with this crop of drivers. It’s how long they have been doing the same thing. With Lewis Hamilton, he’s getting tired, he’s lost motivation. If he never won a world championship, it might be different, because then there would be an incentive to keep racing. But he’s won seven,” insists Ecclestone.

Moreover, Ecclestone thinks Hamilton will struggle as Charles Leclerc’s new teammate and risks polarising and alienating those around him. “The team is happy with Charles Leclerc. He speaks their language, so they’ll be looking after him. Even if Lewis does well, there will still be a lot of obstacles, because he has suddenly arrived and it’s all new. Lewis gets himself up front in a way where you can dislike him. He has a lot of talent as a driver but he’s also a guy who has won a few world titles. And has a few dollars in the bank, so he dresses the way he wants to and does what he wants to. Not everyone is a fan of that,” concludes Ecclestone. – with GMM
