Scottie Scheffler, Amanda Balionis Interview Turns Heads After Historic Win

On Sunday, May 4 Scottie Scheffler tied the PGA Tour’s aggregate record for lowest 72-hole score by with a 31-under, 253.

Scheffler matched Justin Thomas (2017 Sony Open in Hawaii) and Ludvig Åberg (2023 The RSM Classic) with a 253 total – Thomas and Aberg both did so on a Par 70 track, while Scheffler’s came at the Par 71 TPC Craig Ranch. Following his win, the 14th of his career, Scheffler spoke with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis.

“Scottie, there is so much that makes this week special. You just won your hometown event, you tied the PGA Tour scoring record, your son, Bennett, you missed this event last year because this one [pointing to Bennett] was about to be born. What makes this win so meaningful?” Balionis asked.

Neither Balionis nor Scheffler were expecting emotion from the two-time major winner, but he couldn’t hold back tears with son Bennett in his arms after getting his first win of the season.

Yeah, this tournament means a lot to me,” he said before the emotions took over. “My first start as a pro 11 years ago, I had my sister caddying for me too – she’s right back there – I mean it feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these. And they’re pretty special.”

The golf world doesn’t get to see Scheffler show his emotions very often, which made his May 4 victory all the more meaningful for those watching from home.

Scheffler will tee it up next weekend at the Truist Championship, the PGA Tour’s next elevated event.
