Phil Taylor is unable to take part in his penultimate tournament as a professional darts player on medical advice
Phil Taylor will not take part in the World Seniors Darts Matchplay in York this weekend. The Power was due to play his penultimate tournament as a professional darts player but had to withdraw on medical advice.
The 16-time world champion has been suffering from discomfort following hip surgery in recent weeks and has decided to follow advice not to play. However, The Power will be present at the Barbican as part of the commentary team for British broadcaster TNT Sports.
Taylor’s place in York will be taken by three-time Lakeside finalist Tony O’Shea, who had to withdraw from the World Seniors Darts Championship in February due to a hand injury. Silverback will face reigning senior world champion John Henderson in the first round.”Obviously I’m sad that I won’t be able to play in such a big event as the WSDT Seniors World Matchplay,” Taylor said in a statement. “I’ve left no stone unturned in my preparation for the tournament, but following hip surgery I’ve been in pain for the last few weeks and consultants have advised me against playing this weekend.”
“I withdrew from an exhibition tournament in Whitby to give myself every chance of match play but I need to be sensible and take to heart the advice that has been given to me. Rest assured I will do everything I can to be ready and fully fit for the WSDT Seniors World Masters in Sunderland in November.”

The WSDT works tirelessly to organise these events and I’m happy to help in any way I can. It promises to be a fantastic tournament and some people will be glad I’m not playing as the practice sessions have gone really well.”
